In the grand scope (2000+ years!) of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Electro-stimulation (Estim) acupuncture is a relatively new practice. There is some debate regarding it’s origin, with claims that it dates back to the 1940’s. However it came to be, Estim acupuncture has become a popular treatment method for practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine.
Estim acupuncture is similar to the more widely known use of TENS for the treatment of pain conditions. TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), unit application is common practice for physical therapists, chiropractors, and other pain management specialists. TENS and Estim units induce nerve stimulation intended to reduce pain by stimulating the body’s cells and tissues to heal.
With the use of TENS and Estim acupuncture, electrodes attached to a device are applied to the body, emitting a controlled current of electricity that produces motor contraction. With Estim acupuncture, however, the electrodes are attached to needles that have been strategically insterted, sending the currents deeper into the body. Using acupuncture meridians, or pathways, an acupuncturist can address not only the local area concern, but the root of the condition.
Estim acupuncture is wonderfully effective in treating painful conditions that are both chronic and acute, but the healing effects extend beyond pain management. Etim can be used for addictions, psycho-emotional conditions, hypertension, nausea, weight management and more. It is a relatively safe and controlled procedure, but it is not recommended in patients with pace-makers or a history of seizures.
Consult with your acupuncturist to find out of Estim acupuncture would be the right treatment option for you. Essentially Estim is acupuncture- with a little added boost!
