The word arthritis is often associated with the elderly, but truthfully arthritis can affect people in their 40’s or even 30’s, depending on their lifestyle. (Although it may not be diagnosed as such just yet.)
There are different types of arthritis, the most common being osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. These are both diagnosis for joint pain associated with the deterioration of the joints.
In osteoarthritis this deterioration is due to wear and tear of the joint over time, while rheumatoid arthritis is actually an autoimmune disease that is believed to be passed on genetically.
Studies have shown that acupuncture is a great natural alternative to help in diminishing the pain associated with both types of arthritis. Lifestyle changes can also help in slowing down, or preventing the crippling effects of arthritis.
My mom likes to say “motion is lotion!”…This cheesy mom saying is actually true! Moderate exercise can help slow down the process of deterioration and keep joints mobile. Additionally, exercise helps manage weight, and being overweight is naturally harder on the joints.
Another preventative measure is to follow an anti-inflammatory diet. This can get complicated, but some basic inflammation (pain) inducing foods are alcohol, dairy, sugar and in some cases gluten. Staying away from these foods may help to diminish the pain.
Slowing down the progression of deterioration and managing the pain with natural alternatives like acupuncture are the best way to lead a healthy, long life!
